island crush: nene letterpress

while scouting for letterpress prints on etsy last fall, i stumbled upon the delightful birds and blooms of the 50 states series by sf's dutch door press. after dashing off a note, co-designer anna branning kindly tipped me off that an illustration of our state bird would soon have its turn on their chandler & price printing press.

last week, anna happily sent word about their lovely new arrival: our beautiful nene surrounded by bright red hibiscus!

limited edition. 100 prints.

$15 online.

final boarding: sig zane x ito

. . . pop-up by interisland terminal . . .

hopefully, you are one of the lucky locals who met the sig zane 'ohana during their weeklong waikiki appearance talking story about how art, design, travel and the islands combine to influence the family of makers. if you call oahu home, the interisland travelwrights pop-up shop closes on sunday and with it your chance to scoop up limited edition offerings and other goodness (hello kites!) by the hilo label.

although distance is keeping me away (alas!), the story behind the ponoholo print debuting at ito makes me hopeful that it will become a permanent part of the collection. the starry skies that guided the native hawaiians during their navigations across the pacific are intertwined with a woven motif representing the ties that bind . . . from the canoes on which those long ago journeys were made to the connection of the zane 'ohana to their hometown.

happily, the interweb is filled with ito peeks so i gathered up a few to tempt you down to waikiki this weekend!

i love how screenprinting transforms a plain piece of fabric, and was delighted to discover interisland terminal posted a fascinating peek of the made in hawaii production process.

tonight, find out what sparked the creation of kuhao's art installation (6p to 8p), and remember a portion of sales from the ponoholo design benefit interisland terminal!

  • when: now to sun, jun 12th
  • where: waikiki parc hotel, 2233 helumoa road
  • pop-up shop hours: daily, 11a to 7p
  • fyi: free validated parking at hotel (valet only)

etsy scout: chief and crown

bear-ly in love with you

i could hardly contain my excitement when i wandered into chief and crown's shop while on a recent etsy scout. the spare photo styling had me at hello, and the little line from laie's southwestern influence is so very unexpected yet so perfect for summertime.

conor and jane riley, recent arrivals to the north shore, are the husband and wife team constructing all this design goodness. inspired by their childhood love for native american folklore, the delightful pairing marries conor's photograpy with jane's graphic designs to create offerings like handcarved bear and indian stamps decorating moleskine notebooks, visually striking ikat desert prints, and fetching motivational posters to inspire your day.

swoon.

get ready to become smitten after the jump!

are all these little lovelies making you smile, dear reader? the posters would be an especially sweet gift for graduates about to embark on new adventures.

you will be happy to know that the collection is priced just right and ranges from $7 for a handprinted postcard set to $25 for the most charming art kits. hooray!

meet the press: miemiko atelier

unless you follow h|h on rss, my beautiful calling card printed by miemiko atelier (one of my lovely sponsors in case you are a stickler for that sort of detail) greets you with every post and email. i dare say it charms even more in person! the letterpress collection by oahu designer cari nakanishi was one of my very first discoveries, and our shared crush for good design combined with the revelation that we meandered down the same high school hallways helped establish our mutual admiration society.

serendipity matched cari to her vintage chandler & price press which makes the modern impression required of her artisanal small-batch paper delights. and, until a few days ago, your only chance to scoop up miemiko's lovely paper goods was to happen upon them at a handful of local boutiques.

{insert trumpet fanfare}

happily, every single letterpress offering can now be yours with a click. i have been waiting with bated breath since cari first mentioned the possibility of an online makeover, and am swooning with the news that one and all are officially welcome to say hello! gorgeousness abounds on miemiko's spanking new website from little pretties to style your gifting to sweet notes to pass to your favorite friends.

perhaps i should stop gushing and allow you to follow the jump for paper peeks. (did i mention the shop discount just for the h|h 'ohana? carry on for the 411!)

p.s. there may be a waitlist for the diamond head design since i scooped up a stack of note cards for my stationery stash.

p.p.s. hooray for wag+snap who snapped all of miemiko's yummy product shots!
