sugarcane season

happy news for recessionistas! longtime h|h reader and sugarcane shopkeeper faith scheiblich recently sent along news of her recently opened consignment boutique in kaimuki. the former napa valley resident recently moved to the islands with her 'ohana and happened upon the perfect spot for sugarcane which is filled with previously loved home goods and clothing that hint of a sweet vintage beach cottage vibe.

in addition to the resale shop's rotating selection of edited offerings, sugarcane stocks housewares with a retro flair as well as new arrivals (expected in the next week or so) made in the islands including keiki wearables and handcrafted jewelry and accessories.

alas, no website yet so stop by the shop to take a peek at the budget-friendly bargains and say hello!

welcome to lilac ave

today's etsy find is the handcrafted home fragrance line from honolulu's lilac ave which specializes in soy-based scents packaged in a delightful array of vintage and recycled receptacles. deb, the sahm who launched lilac ave before moving to the islands earlier this summer, upcycles everything from candy tins to spaghetti jars and wine bottles to help close the loop and keep perfectly good things out of the landfill.

the charming and eclectic collection of clean burning soy candles are a sweet find for any handmade home and are joined by pretty soy tarts and reed diffusers scented in lemongrass, plumeria, and orange blossom. as an added bonus, lilac ave also offers a refill service to extend the life of each one-of-a-kind container.

take a peek at lilac ave's current offerings over in the official etsy shop.

new peeks: fighting eel fall 2009

mimi

lan chung and rona bennett, the stylish duo behind honolulu-based label fighting eel, have a more structured look in mind for fall 09. word is many of the upcoming season's sophisticated silhouettes were made possible by a more substantial knit, and the new looks (absolutely lovely paired with tights) seem perfectly suitable for work and play.

autumn colorways include a deep navy blue, bold lipstick red, warm olive green, and, my favorite, gorgeous neutral gray.

more peeks below . . .

the fall looks are already waiting on the racks at fe's network of neighborhood stockists and should be arriving in the online shop next week. and, of course, a visit to the label's showroom is always a must stop when you find yourself in chinatown.

hawaii or bust

spotted this fab set from kate spade awhile ago but the show & tell was put on the back burner with all the goings on this summer. alas, the coin purse and ski hat have sold out but the slippers are still offered in the online shop (with free shipping, natch).

although i doubt anyone else could possibly wear the hat as well as this adorable fella.

its popularity does makes me wonder why such a happy-go-lucky and, obviously, island-inspired look was designed so far far away from hawaii.

designer challenge, anyone?
