dan weaver fall 2008

word is that dan weaver, one of hawaii's most watched up & coming indie designers, is putting the finishing touches on his fall 08 collection which will make its official debut next friday.

dan graduated from the uh fashion program and, project runway fans take note, his design chops got him all the way to the third round of last season's audition process. and, while he may not have made it to the big show yet, he did score face time with the impeccable tim gunn.

here's the 411 on the collection:

"the fall o8 collection borrows buffalo plaid and classic americana construction concepts while creating original pieces/looks that place emphasis on classic natural waste [sic] line silhouettes. also timeless styles / concepts / applications are given new life, from the cuffs to the collars. as always extensive detail is paid to color and my love for small color changes in fabric juxtaposition."

see what all the fuss is about and hele over to dan's website to reserve your spot for the fashion show (reserved ticket holders will also score a swag bag filled with goodies and a dw tee).

boardshort roundup

sometimes it seems like the fellas are forgotten about here on h|h so take a moment and enjoy this mid-summer boardshort roundup!

1 - patagonia's palaka boardshorts were the jumping off point for this edition. the delightfully old school pattern is instantly recognizable to anyone who grew up in hawaii back in the day (available online or stop by the haleiwa shop).

2 - paddlers will definitely want to hit the waves in 'oiwi's ho'ohele boardshorts. alas, they have disappeared from the online shop so hit the kailua outpost to get yours.

3 - represent the 808 with j.crew's retro map bermudas (oops, forgot to mention that these may also be available at the ala moana shop).

4 - i spotted loomstate's organic holas boardshort while shopping greenloop's summer sale. the 100% organic cotton will take longer to dry but 'tis a small sacrifice for going green (p.s. a w's version is available here).

a walk back in time

visits to the cemetery are a ritual in hawaii yet only the most curious ever venture beyond the gravesides of their ancestors to say hello to the neighbors. if you count yourself in the camp that considers old cemeteries to be a romantic glimpse into the past, next weekend brings a chance to take a cemetery walking tour with nanette napoleon, hawaii's very own history detective.

go beyond the ghost stories and get the 411 on the symbolism behind the centuries old tombstones and discover more about the inhabitants (a veritable who's who of hawaii history) who have made the cemeteries of the mission houses and kawaiaha'o church their final resting place.

  • when: sat, jul 19th - 9a to 11a
  • where: mission houses museum
  • tix: $20 ($10 museum members)
  • fyi: ring 808.531.0481 x 707 to reserve your spot

pau hana clicks

it's finally tour de france season (allez, allez!) so very little blog reading is happening in my world, but here are a few interesting, if last minute, tidbits:

  • lunch time grinds discovers a mom & pop india market tucked away in honolulu (samosas, spices & saris!).
  • sytycd catchup! the versatile dance moves of local boy mark kanemura ranged from week four's foxtrot and jazz hands to week five's salsa and broadway routine.

have a happy weekend!
