beach reads: the descendants (& a giveaway!)

my mister and i finally escaped to our neighborhood movie house to watch the descendants on what turned into a blustery winter day here on the mainland. dear hawaii, your breathtaking beauty certainly shined on the big screen . . . a lush love note to our island home!

the story, if you have yet to page through the debut novel by kaui hart hemmings, juxtaposes two life changing scenarios - the impending sale of a land trust inherited by the ancestors of a hawaiian princess and her banker husband while the 21st century branch of the king 'ohana (a.k.a. the clooney clan if the movie trailer is your only introduction to this unconventional tale) deals with the agonizing wait of losing their adventure-seeking first lady who traded her heart to a secret sweetheart.

cue sticky predicaments.

read on for more love for the descendants + giveaway details after the jump!

island crush: canvas caravan

popping in with tardy new year wishes for happy everyday moments and delightful adventures be it nearby or faraway!

only a few days remain on my winter holiday filled with much needed sunshine and smiles. alas, an island hop is not in the stars this time around, but the lovely canvas & leather luggage collection designed by sig zane would certainly add a dash of aloha to crowded tsa queues and cramped overhead airplane bins.

three styles. gorgeous prints. made in japan.

$145 & up in-store + online.

hello big island fun!

everything is jake! has a new poster star for its delightfully retro island hop series!

the trio of big island fun designs offers a playful graphic punch (love the flashlight beams!) to thrill adventurers who dive down into the depths of the sea, spelunk through lava tubes, and trek up to kilauea to gaze upon pele's volcanic fire show.

$18 online.

party girl: my little love

islanders love a happy celebration and now pretty party supplies have arrived on the big island to decorate all those folding tables that magically appear when called into duty. hooray! after styling family festivities and hosting her little one's first baby luau, my little love proprietor becky rivera decided to hunt down the fabulous little details featured in the many party peeks on our favorite design blogs in hopes other kama'aina also shared her crush and yearned for a dash of delightfulness to perk up their own soirées.

the online shop made its first hellos earlier this month and is filled with fun fare from patterned balloons and goody bags from paper eskimo to a rainbow of divine twine and striped party cups from sambellina (on its way from australia).

becky, who now calls kona home, plans to offer party styling and pint-sized rentals for smaller social events on the big island later this summer and hopes to extend the service to her hometown of honolulu closer to the holidays.

and, no more procrastinating on those party plans if your zip code falls within the 50th state since my little love's grand opening invitation also includes complimentary shipping to local mailboxes (automatically applied at checkout; pickup is offered for kona friends) through the end of the year!

p.s. oahu peeps can meet my little love's curated selection of party goods at cupcake's keiki pop-up shop this next weekend (details in tomorrow next friday's scoop).

final boarding: sig zane x ito

. . . pop-up by interisland terminal . . .

hopefully, you are one of the lucky locals who met the sig zane 'ohana during their weeklong waikiki appearance talking story about how art, design, travel and the islands combine to influence the family of makers. if you call oahu home, the interisland travelwrights pop-up shop closes on sunday and with it your chance to scoop up limited edition offerings and other goodness (hello kites!) by the hilo label.

although distance is keeping me away (alas!), the story behind the ponoholo print debuting at ito makes me hopeful that it will become a permanent part of the collection. the starry skies that guided the native hawaiians during their navigations across the pacific are intertwined with a woven motif representing the ties that bind . . . from the canoes on which those long ago journeys were made to the connection of the zane 'ohana to their hometown.

happily, the interweb is filled with ito peeks so i gathered up a few to tempt you down to waikiki this weekend!

i love how screenprinting transforms a plain piece of fabric, and was delighted to discover interisland terminal posted a fascinating peek of the made in hawaii production process.

tonight, find out what sparked the creation of kuhao's art installation (6p to 8p), and remember a portion of sales from the ponoholo design benefit interisland terminal!

  • where: waikiki parc hotel, 2233 helumoa road
  • pop-up shop hours: daily, 11a to 7p
